Communications Systems Warfare Officer

Communications Systems Warfare Officers (CSWOs) are the Navy’s experts in Assured Command and Control (AC2), ensuring leaders have secure, reliable access to the information they need to make decisions and execute missions. Their responsibilities include:

• Leading the operation, security and defense of the Navy’s global communications networks
• Architecting advanced data and communications systems that provide commanders with real-time information anywhere in the world
• Ensuring the seamless and secure flow of information between sensors, decision-makers and weapons systems across the battlespace
• Developing tactics and procedures to overcome adversary jamming, interference and other threats to communications
• Driving interoperability with joint, allied and coalition partners across multiple operational environments
• Leading Information Systems Technicians — Enlisted Sailors who serve as specialists in information technology and network operations

Communications Systems Warfare Officers (CSWOs) serve in challenging roles of increasing responsibility across the globe, both afloat and ashore. This could include:

• Leading communications commands at major shore installations worldwide
• Serving on major Navy, joint and coalition military staffs
• Supporting critical national security missions through assignments at the Pentagon, the White House and other strategic commands
• Serving in locations across the globe, including Hawaii, San Diego, Italy, Japan and Bahrain

Those pursuing a Communications Systems Warfare Officer (CSWO) commission begin with Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, RI, where they develop the foundational leadership skills required of a Navy Officer. From there, training continues with a comprehensive pipeline designed to prepare you for operational responsibility, including:

• CSWO Basic Course: An intensive 20-week program in Virginia Beach, VA, focused on communications, global network operations and advanced cybersecurity.
• Information Warfare Basic Course: An introduction to the broader Information Warfare community and its mission across the Navy.
• Division Officer Leadership Course: Practical leadership training designed to prepare Sailors and manage operational divisions from your first assignment.
• Promotion opportunities are regularly available but competitive and based on performance.

Post-Service Opportunities

Specialized training received and work experience gained in the course of service can lead to valuable credentialing and occupational opportunities in related fields in the civilian sector.

This training pipeline is built to ensure CSWOs arrive to the fleet ready to lead, operate and contribute from day one.

The CSWO community places a strong emphasis on advanced and continuous professional development. Officers are highly encouraged to pursue fully funded master’s degrees at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) or other leading academic institutions.

Beyond graduate education, CSWOs are supported in earning industry-recognized certifications such as CISSP and Security+, as well as participating in civilian executive fellowships and specialized internships.

A degree from a four-year college or university with a GPA of 3.0 or higher is a minimum educational requirement to become a Commissioned Officer. To become a Communications Systems Warfare Officer (CSWO), you must meet the additional requirements:

• Preferred Majors: STEM degrees are highly preferred, especially in cybersecurity, computer science, data science or systems engineering
• Coursework: Completion of calculus I and II and calculus-based physics I and II is highly desired
• Testing: A minimum score of 50 on the Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) test
• Security: Must be a U.S. citizen eligible to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance
• Medical: Must be physically qualified for sea duty and worldwide deployment
• Professional IT Certifications such as Security+ or CISSP are prior civilian networking experience are highly valued

General qualifications may vary depending upon whether you’re currently serving, whether you’ve served before or whether you’ve never served before.

You can also serve part-time as a Communications Systems Warfare Officer (CSWO) in the Navy Reserve. In this role, you’ll perform your duties during scheduled drilling periods — typically one weekend a month (referred to as drilling) and two weeks of annual training each year (referred to as Annual Training). Reserve CSWOs often complete drilling close to their homes and may serve anywhere in the world, whether on a ship at sea or at bases and installations on shore, for Annual Training.

Communications Systems Warfare Officers in the Navy Reserve serve in an Officer role supporting mission-critical communications operations and maintaining the same technical and operational standards as Active Duty counterparts. Before receiving the ongoing professional training that comes with this job, initial training requirements must first be met.

For current or former Navy Officers (NAVET): Prior experience satisfies the initial leadership training requirement, so you will not need to go through Officer Training again.

Officers who previously held a commission in another United States Military Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Public Health Service or United States Coast Guard are exempt from attending DOS or LDO/CSO Academy.
